The new Timeline for Facebook Brand Pages is now upon us. Here’s how the changes will effect your business page and the new opportunities it presents.

Cover Photo

Create a giant banner that conveys what your brand’s all about. While your photo can’t contain explicit calls to action or Facebook features, it can be an opportunity to be creative and drive your visitors to interact with your brand.

Apps

Apps now have great visibility, the small icons have gone in favour of a larger picture/graphic area which you can choose from your Timeline admin area. There is room for 4 Apps by default, however viewers can see more Apps by clicking the arrow to the right. We think interaction with the hidden apps could be a less, we have no figure’s on this, but it stands to reason, if they can’t see it, they won’t use it.

Tip: Place your favoured Apps first, possibly combine functions of two or more apps into one.

Once a viewer clicks through to an App, they are now presented with a wider area, 800 pixels, instead of 520 pixels. The larger area brings Facebook more inline with existing website sizes, more space means a better user experience and overall less scrolling.
Note: If you have an App already it will continue to do it’s job, however you will note the blank space. Over time all apps will be redeveloped or replaced to fit the new size.

Fans and Non Fans

Many campaigns focus on gaining Fans via the like button in order to reveal further content, this is still supported by Facebook. However, there’s currently a bug. Right now, when a non-fan “likes” you, they need to refresh their browser to view your campaign. We believe Facebook plans to fix this in the near future. For now, you can update your creative with instructions for non-fans to refresh after they ”like” your page.
Tip: The position of the Like button has changed, so if your non-fan tab image contains an arrow pointing to the Like button, it will need to be updated.

Pinning & Milestones

Pinning your campaigns: While it’s no longer possible to set default landing tabs, Timeline’s new pinning feature is a great opportunity for even better campaign positioning. With this feature, you can anchor the most important story to the top of your page for up to seven days. It’s perfect for promoting sweepstakes, contests, and promotions. Plus, it’s visible to both fans and non-fans.

You can now add milestones and choose to make some featured posts larger than others. This can help you promote your campaigns, and create a brand narrative to share with your fans.

This page from the official Facebook pages PDF is a good example to explain the new page layout.

Overall our opinion is that businesses have more opportunity to promote their brand, besides the obvious graphic opportunities in the Cover Photo and better branding of the Apps, clever use of milestones and pinning could really make a difference, presenting a more detailed view of your company and it’s history.

The new Facebook Timeline layout is now part of our Social Media package. If you would like to chat about your new Facebook page identity, please get in touch on 01273 777006.
